Termites

Description:

Termites do not give themselves away immediately when they are found in a house or garden. They cause significant material damage until the damage is visible. All termite species feed on cellulose containing materials. Wood and paper products are the two products most affected by termite attacks. The body length of termites is between 0.6-1.2 cm. Queens and kings are larger. Their body length can exceed 2.5 cm. Worker termites are whitish in colour and have soft bodies. Worker termites have no wings. Flying termites (breeders) are black in colour and have two pairs of wings.

Behaviour:

In general, termites live in wooden structures, rotting trees, logs and soil. The habitat varies according to the species of termite because each species has different moisture requirements. In summer, the fertile (flying termites) leave their mature colonies and make a mating flight. The mated termites lose their wings, become king and queen and start a new colony. The eggs that hatch from the eggs produced by the queen in the colony evolve according to the needs of the colony and take their place in the labourer, soldier or fertile class. Queens of some species of termites can produce millions of eggs each year.

Prevention:

- Eliminating conditions that cause dampness in your home is important to avoid attracting termites. Leaking fountains that cause water to seep into the floor of the house, water leaking from the air conditioner, etc... issues should be fixed. Winter firewood should be stacked so that it does not touch the walls of the house and does not come into direct contact with the soil.
